ReplyDeleteThe development of computer assisted language learning forms the wider picture of language teaching. It is sometimes easy to forget that computers have been available as a resource in language teaching for little more than twenty years. During this short time, there has been a dramatic change in the number of options open to language teachers and learners. Computers were mainly used as a sophisticated typewriters, allowing learners to write and to correct effectively. Although many learners seem to be much more familiar with the use of computers than a lot of teachers appear to be. There is still plenty of scope for some input in class related to computers. Computers have become so widespread in schools and homes and their uses have expanded so dramatically that the majority of language teachers now think about the implications. Technology brings about changes in the teaching methodologies of foreign languages unless they are used to simply to automate fill-in-the gap exercises. The use of the computer does not constitute a teaching method, but rather the computer forces pedagogy to think in new ways to exploit the computer benefits and work around its limitations. To exploit computers potential we need language teaching specialists who can promote a complementary relationship between computer technology and appropriate pedagogic programs.
ReplyDeleteI just made it only in my point of view... and i expect for your people comments. Come with more points friends.....it will definitely makes with more realistic

ReplyDeleteAs per the analyzation of the given text CALL, here is my attempt of making a critical review:
There are major advantages in utilizing a CALL as teaching tools especially in teaching language in any aspect such as grammar teaching as linguistic approach. It creates self-motivation in interest within the students. CALL assist the learners in the best effective way. The methodology of learning style is more compatible when they are not forced to employ teacher's method.
Learner's feel more beneficial when they get immediate feedback soon after any activity. The computer is defenitely capable of giving instantaneous feedback to help the learner from any error at its intial stage.
There is much freedom of expression been given to the learner when it comes under "Guided and Free writing" activity. When paragraphing, style , cohesion is been concerned the learner is not controlled by the teacher. That seems to be one such good perspective for a learner to create their views and ideas.
There is much sophistication in the use of CALL software between a teacher and a student
yes, since the students are not forced to employ teacher's method, but in most centres, learners access materials and manage their learning independently, but have access to staff for help.
DeleteIn the second article, Role changes for teachers and students have been discussed in the apprehensions part. That is the considerable one. Instead of handling down knowledge to students and being the center of students attention, teachers become guides as they construct the activities students are to do and help them as students complete the assigned tasks. In other words, instead of being directly involved in students construction of language, the teacher interacts with the students primarily to facilitate difficulties in using the target language.
ReplyDeleteComputers have been used for language for the past few years but I personally didn't know that there were so many programs that can be performed. I felt it interesting when I started to read the article on CALL and its applications. CALL helps the students to develop their thinking and linguistic skill and promote self confidence. Users get authentic reading materials and sometimes associated with fun and games. It also helps the students to communicate globally. Students are benefited by using these computer applications and help them to strengthen their LSRW skills. Teachers are also highly benefited by these applications making their much more simple, easy and interesting. They can use applications like HOT POTATOES, CLOZE GENERATOR, JAVA SCRIPT QUIZ MAKER etc, where it makes the session exciting and progressive.
ReplyDeletebut shouldnt teachers be trained in integrating technology in teaching?
DeleteThe article made me feel that CALL was a dynamic and evolving field where it uses more technology. I made it a point that I would use these applications like JAVA SCRIPT QUIZ MAKER, LESSON PREPARATION TOOLS etc in my teaching methods. CALL knowledge and skills must be constantly renewed to stay apace of the field. Learners are able to pick up language knowledge or skills faster or with less effort. It also helps the students to retain their knowledge for a long time where they use virtual games. Students experience a new learning and exciting method. Students see teachers as a facilitator and they become active participants in learning a language. Students moved from paper and pen to the computer for learning. It also helps to communicate with electronic pen friends through chat rooms, e mails. They also publish their projects in webpage.
ReplyDeleteIn response to the first two articles, it has similar reflections on CALL and its evolution. It's so obvious that CALL had gone through a great leap of transition right from the structural phase to the current integrative phase. Each transition aimed ideally at taking technology to the doorstep of every teacher in widening the interface experience. When there is so much to be explored , we tend to jump to conclusions along the old tradition without being an explorer. Unfortunately I wanted to add ma ideas on the same , by posing the merit and demerit that is striking. With regard to scope which has been the greatest advantage, as it handles two huge intense disciplines( academics and language) blended together. With not only restricting to the indian educational scenario, it has become a prerogative for every teacher/ academician to be skilled enough in proficiently handling this interesting yet a complex task. While scope is , the current demand of such equipped facilitator, there is also a very visibe demarcation line when it comes to feasibility and accessibilty of these softwares. To be more specific, with other nations progressing with uninterrupted accessibilty of 3G 4G coverage, India has failed to provide us the luxury of such experience. So while CALL only setting its standard high, it is mandatory enough for us as as society/ a nation to move along, recognise, adapt, appreciate and adept ourselves to such explorations .
ReplyDeleteIn second Article by T.Ravichandran: he says computer useful in second language learning. Computer teach the language in different and more interesting, attractive ways and present language through games, animated graphics and problem solving techniques. In my point of view computer is partially useful in second language learning and it could not be more successful in learning second language. There is no scope in learning writing skill through computer. And he continues: 'by using the computer, students are often able to use their Academic Learning Time [ALT] more fruitfully' but I am opposing this point because state like Tamil Nadu we do not have good electricity supply and main thing there is no individual computer for a student.
ReplyDeletesoftware and programs used in CALL which I was impressed is the "Lesson Preparation Tools". In this link I liked Academic word list Highlighter because it is more useful to learn vocabulary, it helps to learn spelling and store list of words and we can create our own dictionary.
ReplyDeletewhere are other comments?
ReplyDeleteCALL is an approach to language learning and teaching. The article on CALL gives a detailed history about it. Apart from which it lead students to make use of such tools looking at the advantages. It is a field where learners are encouraged to learn and grow up their knowledge in handling technologies. CALL helps the learners to learn and be more supportive in improving their skills. It is more liked by the younger generation because the learners are more enthusiastic to use computers and technologies in learning. This is where the learning takes place technically and theoretically.
ReplyDeleteWith great development on technologies and improvement in academics, the teachers and learners are using computers for teaching and learning. The learners then must first come to know the benefits and limitations of using computer, which helps them to overcome the barriers in teaching and learning. Using computers the learning style has complete change. They allow the students to set out their personal works because it gives them the time . it helps to increase the motivation of the slow learners, because learners have more time to learn , they don't hesitate to ask question because no stress is involved. They even get their feedbacks which help them to improve their learning process. This is the way where learning takes place more when compared to traditional teaching. Now a days are in a world where without computers and technology nothing can be acheived. So students and teachers should be responsible in using these techniques in learning and teaching strategies.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the first two articles it is more impressive and informative to learn about CALL thanks mam . Here the role played by the computer benefits the learners in different ways, it motivates the students to engage themselves actively in language acquisition , it is more of student oriented, where they happily get through all the activities and complete their task by their own. Through these activities self learning , questioning , creativity are getting developed within the students, and thus enhances them with involvement.
ReplyDeleteit paves way for experimental learning , enhance self-confidence , promotes interactions with their team, group projecting , and more of global interactions where the students practicing communication on a global level.
ReplyDeletesoftware which interested me was educational freeware, were i could found many links like Google Earth through which viewed satellite maps , galaxies, stars, then Anki, flashcards technique which enhances in learning vocabulary , Marble info about world atlas.
ReplyDeletebut apart from all these developments in technologies and wide range of availability of rich resources still government schools students still lacking back. why is that rich one getting more benefits than the poor ????
ReplyDeleteThis question will take place in the entire field. When we come to education through technology rich background students have their own computer and most probably their parents well educated and used to computer. So they are getting more precious time and knowledge from the rich background while compared to the poor students. For the poor students only source is the School. Government should take serious process for giving technology for individual students and well trained teachers also. We can appreciate Tamil Nadu government in giving Laptop, it really useful to rural background students. By serious step by governments, schools, teachers and student’s interest poor background students also will definitely get more benefits in using technology.
Deletebut apart from all these developments in technologies and wide range of resources availability still government schools students in tamilnadu is lacking back. why is that only rich one gets all the benefits why not the poor???????
